Soundtrack to a Happy Life

Comments

It’s rare (read: never) that I put up a post that came from some sort of homework. But when we had to create an alternative medium for our memoirs in English, I knew I was going to compile a soundtrack to my life. After creating it, I noticed that none of the songs are unhappy or depressing, and maybe music is the reason I am as happy as I am. Well here are the songs for the soundtrack and the reasoning.

1. The Specials - A Message to You Rudy
This song made me think of what I was doing in life, made me question my values, morals and direction. The lyric that did it was “Stop your messing around, better think of your future.”

2. The Beatles - All You Need Is Love
Mr. Puryear was my sophomore year American Lit teacher in high school. He had more of an effect on my life besides my parents and sister. He had a “Beatles week” where we learned about The Beatles and were quizzed over it. This song stuck out in my mind as he repeated that the message is so important, that all you need is love. This was coming from a teacher who had been earning a very healthy income working for a large financial company and decided he wanted to teach at a Catholic private school.

3. Of A Revolution - Risen
“Wouldn’t it be the best damn day if we all just took the time to breathe?” Simply put.

4. Bob Marley - Three Little Birds
Bob can always make me smile, no matter how bad of a day I am having. “Don’t worry about a thing.”

5. Long Beach Dub Allstars - Sunny Hours
“I only got the sunny hours, the brightest hours of day; I never count the gloomy hours, I let them slip away.” Pay more attention to the better parts of your day and, for that matter, your life.

6. Jack Johnson - Talk Of The Town
“World is a puzzle, find all the pieces, put it all together.” Work towards determing what life means to you and how it is important. That might sound religious, but mind you I am very far from a pious individual.

7. Rise Against - Swing Life Away
“We get by just fine here on minimum wage.” It doesn’t take much to be a happy person, just friends.

8. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy - Mr. Pinstripe Suit
Yeah Paul! This song reminds me of my friend Paul and how we would go swing dancing. For the Halloween dance, we bought $10 pinstriped three-piece suits and wore them as our costumes. Always makes me laugh.

9. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy - Jump With My Baby
I met my ex-girlfriend swing dancing and my current girlfriend swing dancing. While the ex didn’t work out, I hope that I’m with my current girlfriend for a good while. Also, I hope she doesn’t mind being called my baby…

10. Madeleine Peyroux - Don’t Wait Too Long
This is something I had to take to heart recently. Make sure that you don’t let that someone special slip away, I’m glad I didn’t.

11. The Planet Smashers - No Self Control
Haha, as my classmate Melissa said the lyrics are “hot”. Kinda describes how I feel right about now.

12. Flogging Molly - Tomorrow Comes a Day Too Soon
This one is a great song, but more importantly is the title. Enjoy every day as if it was your last, don’t waste your time (you don’t have much), when its over its over. Smile at random people and love with your heart. Tell your family how much you love them, make sure your friends know that you love them, and make sure that you leave your mark on people. Life is too short to blend in and stare at the ground.
