John Butler Trio’s Grand National

Comments

This is mostly an excuse to show you some awesome album art, but also this album is awesome. I’ve only heard a few songs, but I can say that this album will keep a space in my rotation for a while. It’s new and classic all at the same time and brings a nice change of pace to my stagnant library.

Your Gateway to Psychobilly

Comments

I have found the perfect gateway drug into the world of psychobilly, an interesting standoff in the punk world. The psychobilly community decided early on that they would avoid all things political to avoid the problems that plagued the politically charged punk world. Also, they found one common theme to unite around: cheesy horror movies. The sound of psychobilly is also very different from what you might expect, they include the standing bass from the genre that formed their name: rockabilly.

After that little introduction to the genre, let me tell you about The Peacocks, a Swedish psychobilly band. I randomly picked up their album when I saw it was getting popular and quickly found out why. They manage to stay true to the sound of psychobilly without alienating new listeners to the genre. The sound is pure bliss to my ears and just seems happy and energetic. This will definitely end up in my CD player for the summer as it just has that quality to it that screams summer. They have a few tracks up on their website, so I’d give them a listen as the sound isn’t for everyone.

Westbound Train

Comments

It’s kinda rare that I find a band that makes me jump upon hearing one song. I’m so jaded by the constant battering unleashed upon me by media conglomerates and radio station glitterati. So I was kind of surprised when I saw Transitions on 3hive. I didn’t know quite what to expect from them, yet at the same time Hellcat records has a pretty good track record. So, I gave the one song they have up a listen. A few seconds through, I knew that this band had something that I am always looking for: the sound that makes you happy.

Their music isn’t the same crap you hear on the radio on your drive home. It’s the music that makes you smile and gets your toes tapping. So if you are having a bummer of a day, hop on over to the 3hive page and listen to the song they have up, you’ll smile.

Mishaps Happening

Comments

So, I think its kinda obvious I have a music problem. I listen to way to much and love listening to everthing I can get my hands on, barring rap and emo. Every now and again there comes a song (not an artist or album) that I love so much it gets played over and over again. Hopefully its not just because the radio plays it or that it has some crazy hooks in it that keep me coming back for the killer guitar riff, even though that has happend.

This time it’s Quantic’s Mishaps Happening. Just wow, the song reminds me of summer, vacation and beaches. A wonderful little song when my car is becoming covered in ice and I have to wear a wool coat, a scarf (that my sister knit for me, she’s awesome) and my leather gloves (that my amazing girlfriend bought for me). Maybe, I’ll keep adding songs that remind me of summer, would be nice to think about…

Jet’s Shine On

Comments

When I first got this album I was pretty uninterested in anything but “Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is” (which is arguably one of the better songs). However, sometimes the mood strikes me to try again. So, I started to listen to the song again and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the songs on this album. Sure, they have the current “Alternative” sound going on, but at the same time, some of the songs have very Beatle-esque sounds, such as “Bring It On Back”. Grab it and give it another shot.
